The Sound of a Train at Night
At night I can lie in my bed
And feel rumbling through the sheets
The little tremors that shake the world
While I struggle with sleep
Rolling wheels and rhythmic bumps
Over steel spanning miles and years
Become melodious drums to my senses
My iron cicadas of the night
And then comes the whistle
The warning that breaks the silence
A beacon like thunder; as loud as its crack
Yet quiet to all but me
And soon it wanes as it rose
All the sounds and all the feelings
Gone before I could remember
This forgotten part of the night.
