It was a lie and she knew it. But it was only a little white lie in her mind. He didn't need to know. To have ideas floating though his mind, would be beyond the pale. She gave him a soft smile as she spoke her words. The corner of her mouth rising near the end. It was a tell, but not many knew; family and close friends mostly.
What's one more little fib amongst a lifetime of lies? With that thought, an internal giggle erupted and she repeated the line. "I love you."
It was a fun game to her, as she dug her nails into his heart and twistes ever so gently.
Way beneath the surface. Past her tears. Beyond her own hurt. She knew what she should be telling him. She should release her grip, let him go, and speak the words: You deserve better.
She nudged the idea aside. Perhaps she would table that conversation for another time. For now she would have fun one more time. She curled a finger around the drawstring of her blouse, loosing the knot. Her hands tightened around the nape of his neck and drew him in.
