The Seer
The Beginning
Dream.....Nightmare.............Surreality.
.....
"Welcome back. You left us twice. Do you remember anything?"
Who are you? Where am I?
"Can you tell me your name?"
Sleepy.
"It's okay. You don't have to say anything. You've had a rough few days. We found you in time and you're a fighter. Sleep now. You're safe."
I'm safe. Safe...from.....?
.....
"He's awake. Get the nurse."
Here again. Where is here?
"Wait for the nurse. She'll be-"
"-Right here. Tell me your name."
"Who...are you?"
"I'm the head nurse on the floor. What's your name?"
"Why? What's yours?"
The intern laughs and hurries out of the room. The head nurse storms out, "The bedpans in each of the rooms, now! There's nothing wrong with that child."
The intern runs away in tears.
.....
Several hours later, a child psychologist steps into the room. She picks up the chart at the foot of the bed, reads for a moment, then asks, "Has anyone bothered to feed you?"
"No."
The psychologist removes the restraints.
"Go use the restroom. I'll call the kitchen. If you could have anything to eat, what would it be?
.....
After a hearty meal, the boy burped. Laughter fills the hospital room.
The boy looks at the psychologist and allows, "Thank you, Alex, for sharing your meal with me."
Alejandra Montalvo was struck by the guess at her name.
"Water. Sleep. You woke up to your dad rocking you in his arms after he brought you back from the bottom of the pool."
"How-"
"I saw it. Just like I saw the waffles, strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream that we just ate. You had that with your dad after the pool."
"You couldn't possibly have known that. How-?"
"My name isn't John Doe, like it says in the file. It's Victor. Victor Paz. You won't find my family. I was given away."
Alex stepped out of the room, dazed.
.....
"I'm sorry."
"You didn't do anything wrong, sweetie. I was just surprised, that's all.
You can see the past. Can you see tomorrow? Or the day after?"
"No."
"Do you remember what happened to you? How you got here?"
"No."
.....
"The layperson knows it as selective amnesia. Whatever it is that happened to him is too much for him to handle at the moment. Given time and lots of care, he may recuperate his memory of the trauma. That's when the real work will begin."
"What's going to happen to him?" The head nurse asked from obligation. Victor terrified her by letting her know that he would tell about her adult toys and male slaves if she wasn't nicer. She was glad to see him go.
"We've found him a foster home and will continue therapy until he adjusts and is comfortable in his new environment."
.....
Alex rode with Victor to his new home. The two reached an understanding that they would keep his talent to themselves. After the initial meet and greet, Alex hugged Victor goodbye.
"Don't freak out the new family," she whispered. They laughed and cried. With the introduction of the new family, the dynamic between the two had to change. No more protective bubble. Victor knew he had to be careful.
