Immortality
is a slow, relentless torture
condemned to heaving footsteps,
where your heart is tied to a past that is slowly receding
farther, and farther and farther
try to imagine the life slipping through your fingers
like water, like smoke;
and you hold so tight your fingers start to bleed
but you are left with nothing more than the unfamiliar shades of a foreign world
think of every last drop of love that you have ever felt
and it drains
think of every mark you have every made
dirty, fading, forgotten
think of every pen you have used,
pen on paper to write out everything you can’t say,
to write out everything that’s tearing you apart
bled dry.
Think of a deathless hell.
That is immortality.
