Willer’s Book (Part 4)
…I was looking at him being in a stupor, unable to say a word.
— Don’t worry about me, Olivia, everything is alright. This place… — he took a view of the county and calmly continued. — Everything is different here, I can’t explain it to you.
But at that moment I was agitated by absolutely another question.
— I… I don’t understand, you’ve just come back… And why do I hear your voice while others are frightened only of my appearance?
— Unfortunately, I just can’t tell you about many things, after all, the boundaries of knowledge just don’t exist here. There are things that it’s too early for people to know about. — he pointed to the road, offering to go for a walk a little. — And the fact you are able to hear me is the most interesting one, and why didn’t I guess it earlier. But you’ll understand everything soon… And by the way, it’s very important. There is a black device with a metal handle in the office where you found the book. It resembles a small hand organ. I will be happy if you can start it.
— I won’t see you anymore… — I said looking into the emptiness.
— Things aren’t so easy, and, frankly speaking, even I don’t know the answer to this question. — Henry took my hand, and I immediately felt better.
We were unhurriedly walking along the main street until I met my father again. He was dangling after that woman. But who is she, I thought to myself.
— She is his best friend’s wife. — Henry said calmly.
— You can read my thoughts!? — I wondered.
— I’ve already said it, knowledge doesn’t have any boundaries in this place. — he smiled gently and prolonged. — His friend died in a car accident, and his wife was left alone with a small child. She asked your father for help a number of times, but he always rejected. He was held by an offence as long as he lived. — Henry took a deep breath. — When you and your friend fall in love with the same woman and she makes her choice not in your favor, it’s very painful, Olivia… Very painful…
— It’s strange, he didn’t tell me about it.
— You barely became only a year and a half at that time. You were so pretty in your childhood. — after saying this Henry broke into a smile. — Don’t look at me such a way, the concept of time doesn’t exist here as well.
And suddenly I felt that I am sharply falling asleep. Fighting with this wish was just impossible. I began to settle on the ground and after a minute came to my senses in the small office.
I didn’t even realize at once what was happening. Unauthorised persons were talking in the flat. I carefully adjusted my dressing gown and went to the corridor.
— Who are you? And who let you go there at all? — the policeman asked being at a total loss.
— I’m a mistress of this flat. — I uttered already understanding that something irreparable had happened.
— Did you know who Henry Chaise was?
— Yes… He rented one of my rooms, did something happen to him? — goose-flesh ran through my body as a wave.
— He is in coma now, the neighbors heard a shot and called the police.
— So that’s why I could talk to you… — I pronounced in a whisper.
— Sorry? — the policeman was amazed not less than I.
— Everything is O.K., and in which hospital is he laying?
— Brooklyn Hospital.
When the policemen finished their work, I shut myself in the Henry’s room and began to look for a small hand organ.
It caught my eyes right away.
I was turning a handle until a sound came from a black box.
“— You knew that I will find you, Henry. And you knew which end it will have.
— If this book happens to be in wrong hands…
— It is in wrong hands already. Are you alone here? — An unknown man said in a cold voice.
— Do you see somebody else? It’s you who killed my father, you killed. I will never forgive you for this, did you hear? Never!
— Of course you will not, fool, you’ll have no time. — the speaker smirked, and a shot rang out”.
The sound stopped, and tears flowed from my eyes.
I have been sitting in the intensive care unit near his bed for the fifth day. The doctor said that there is almost no hope, but I distinctly remembered his words that even he does not know the answer to the question will we see each other again or not. We will see, Henry, we will definitely see…
