“Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Review”
First of all, do I dare review this masterpiece? Do I really want to? Do I have the courage? *deep breath* Alright, let’s do this!
So, here I am about to review one of Level-5’s masterpieces “Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.” First of all, if you love animation and LOVE Studio Ghibli and Joe Hisaishi then cry your little eyes out because these two amazing groups come together to create this AMAZING game. I can’t even describe how awesome it is: the graphics are phenomenal, the music makes my ears orgasm multiple times and the story is so “flippin’” epic.
So, to summarize without spoilers, you play as a boy named Oliver in the “human” world (our world), who receives a doll from his mother. A few days (or weeks?) later, she tries to save Oliver from drowning and ends up dying (sorry, spoiler) and Oliver somehow realizes she’s alive and goes searching for her (don’t really remember how, it’s been a while) Long story short, his doll is actually a fairy named Drippy, who comes from a parallel world—where each person has a copy of themselves in the other world. They may look different, like a human in one world and a cat-person in the other. So anyway, Oliver, with Drippy’s help, opens a gate to the other world and begins a search for his mother...
While playing this game, you may notice that many places, and characters, in this new world are related to children’s stories like Ding Dong Dell for example. It’s a town ruled by cats and they are fighting the mice for dominion. Yeah, pretty cool and crazy at the same time. You also gain some new friends like Esther and Swaine—each with their own unique abilities; creatures you can tame, battle and evolve and feed; and you get to traverse a giant overworld. You eventually befriend a cute dragon too!
I know I am skimming over so much stuff, like the combat-style (lots of button variations); the plotline (traversing a lot between worlds and learning spells, since Oliver becomes a wizard) and of course, the villains. Did I say villians? Yes, because there are plenty to go around and each one is unique. Most of them are villains because part of their souls are missing (trapped in the other world) so you have to return them to their rightful owners. Returning said villain back to normal.
Like I said guys, this game is just to awesome to type into words. There is just so much stuff and by the time I typed it all; I’d have a book written. This game does have a sequel, although it happens centuries later. It’s called, “Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom” and this game is just as good, even though Studio Ghibli didn’t do the artwork. It still looks amazing though, and the combat is less complicated than its predecessor and instead of familiars (the creatures that you tame, battle, evolve and feed), you get higgledies; who look like elemental sprites. In this one, you get President Roland (yes, the president from our world), a prince from Ding Dong Dell and a sky pirate princess! You also get a flying ship.....okay, I’ll stop. When I finish that game, I’ll write a review for you, okay?
