“Wishing Star”

I am a star

that shines so bright,

way up high

in the moonlit night.

Looking down

on the earth below,

shining bright

just to say “hello”.

You then look up,

as if in reply

with a smile on your face,

towards the dazzled sky.

“I wish, I wish—”

you began to say

clasping hands

as if to pray.

I lean forward,

just to hear,

of your heart’s desire,

a wish so dear.

but when you spoke,

no words were said,

you just kept smiling

and turned around instead.

I was befuddled,

even confused.

What did you wish for?

I constantly mused.

A few nights later,

after watching you pray.

In the same spot,

day after day.

I noticed you were thinner,

at least that‘s what it seemed.

You looked way too skinny,

way too lean.

You also lost that twinkle,

that spark in your eye.

Did something terrible happen?

Would you tell me why?

But I never got an answer,

not even a clue.

For one day you disappeared,

out of the blue.

One day went by,

then two and three,

I began to wonder

if you forgot about me.

Then on the fourth night,

I met some nice lady,

who stood in the same spot

where you did daily.

She too looks up

at the dazzled sky,

before clasping her hands

and beginning to cry.

“Star, o’ star

shining bright,

please watch my child

as he takes flight.

May he be welcomed

with open arms

arriving in Heaven

safe from all harm.

Star, o’ star

please grant my wish,

for cancer is unfair

in a world such as this.”

With tears in her eyes,

the lady then leaves,

going on home

to continue to grieve.

I cried too,

my body burning bright,

for no longer would the boy

be visiting at night.

My body felt so hot,

I began to feel cold

it didn’t take long,

for me to explode..
