Abandon Ship
The vibrations were unlike anything the imagination could anticipate. An arduous, eight-minute ride of ascent as if the road to hell was paved of cobblestone into the sky as opposed to the burning pits of our dying world. All the view ports were closed tight; this would be the last physical sensation of home.
Looking around what would be a testing abode for the next thirty-seven years of life, one could not help but notice the state of current surroundings; this would be an awkward undertaking. Crunched into tiny seats, produced by the lowest bidder--fifty-two other distraught, panicked and grief stricken individuals clung to their loved ones and family members – desperately afraid, confused, angry. Klaxons blared and emergency symbols illuminated the overhead displays; something was irreversibly wrong.
The crew appeared panicked under a cool shroud of professionalism. This was the day
humanity had been preparing for, the day of reckoning. Still the drills, the constant laborious memorization of all protocols and procedures could never prepare for the onslaught of adrenaline infused emotions filling the cramped bay. Like venomous snakes, feelings of doubt and despair manifested themselves on the faces of all those involved in this terrifying affair.
Explosions rocked first forward - into the bulkheads of the craft seeming to loosen every bolt, brace, and weld. The sounds of metal on metal, shrieks and shrills of nearby humanoid creatures, and depressurization could not be mistaken. Vomit was close to snout as the craft lurched seemingly in all directions, struggling to maintain integrity. There was no return trip for repairs; no one to save this dying beast of hell, directed to escape and carry our virus across the stars.
Of the other minds in proximity, how many were considering how humanity had pushed along to this point? How many regrets were shared amongst the passengers? Nonetheless, we would surely, all perish soon.
As the heat swirled about the bulkheads, final sounds of the craft failing around the passenger pod closed in. Sweat beaded at the brow and bowels threatened to relieve themselves. A final thought forced itself into fruition: selfishness and greed.
