Dad

There once was a dad, three sons by his side

He watched them all grow, full of love, full of pride

The brothers all fought and they played and they grew

And they did all the things that three brothers do

And life, it was perfect for the dad and those three

And I think we should know, one was you, one was me

There once was a dad, two sons by his side

Together they lost, they mourned, and they cried

But life kept on coming and the two boys they grew

The dad offered guidance and shared all he knew

Their story continued, they each played their part

But now they all carried a hole in their heart

For where there were four, now there were only three

And I think we should know, one was you, one was me

There once was a dad, one son by his side

The other had moved and the distance was wide

And life for the two it was turned inside out

Together they stood, full of fear, full of doubt

They fought and they struggled, souls battered and beat

But the dad, he would never allow their defeat

It seemed that their efforts were always in vain

Crushed by the loneliness, trapped by the pain

And neither one knew if they’d ever be free

And I think we should know, one was you, one was me

There once was a dad with no sons at all

The last left in anger and never would call

And so the two drifted, and both were alone

The son had abandoned all he had known

The dad, he was haunted by how thing once were

And how he had gotten here, he wasn’t quite sure

No fault could be placed, they were victims of life

Driven apart by the heartache and strife

So the dad kept his distance and watched his son learn

And kept hope that, one day, his son would return

And so, for the first time, they stood separately

And I think we should know, one was you one was me

There now stands a dad, two men at his side

And both look upon him with honor and pride

He hears what they say and he sees what they do

And watches as all he had hoped for comes true

He’s no longer alone, there will always be three

And I hope that you know, one is you one is me
