Blood Part 6
Emilie was just putting on a pot of coffee when she heard a knock at the door. She answered it to find Graham looking as if he had just woken up.
“Hey!” She greeted him with more positive energy than when she had called, “Coffee?”
“Uhhh, yea. Sure.”
She went back to the kitchen and got out two mugs “Cream?”
“No….Is everything alright?”
“Oh yea, everything’s fine. Sugar?”
“No thanks. It’s just that over the phone it sounded like something might be wrong. Are you sure everything is fine?”
Emilie came back with the two mugs of steaming hot coffee. She handed one to Graham then kissed him on the mouth. “I know. I’m sorry I called you. I just had a bad dream. I guess it freaked me out a bit.”
They both sat on the couch and sipped their coffee. “So, tell me about it.” Graham said.
“No, I can’t it’s…” Emilie searched for the right word, “Embarrassing.” That was not the right word but it would have to satisfy Graham because she was not going to delve into this part of her life with him so deeply, not yet.
“C’mon, Em. Talk to me. You’re always so closed up. I mean, you did call me and ask me to come over, right?”
“Ok,” Emilie sighed, “It was about Remi’s dad.” Emilie hoped her vague response would satisfy Graham.
“Oh, ok.” Graham responded dully. Emilie was pleased he did not inquire further. Graham was aware of Emilie’s abusive ex but they never discussed it in detail. “Well, that makes sense. I mean, you’ve been through a lot this year.”
“Yea, I’m probably just stressed out. Remi’s been having nightmares too and then yesterday he bit some girl at school.”
“He bit somebody?”
“Yea, bad. The girl had to go to the hospital.”
“Geez.” Responded Graham, at a loss for real words. Emilie was at a loss too. Then, he put his arm around her. “Well, you can call me whenever you want. Day or night.”
“And there was one other thing about the dream I haven’t told you.” She looked in his eyes. “You were in it.”
“What? I was in a dream about your ex?”
“Yea, and that’s not all. In my dream you were dead. I think that’s what scared me most. I had shut you out of my life for so long and then you were dead.”
“I’m not dead now.” Graham said gesturing to himself as if Emilie wasn’t aware he was sitting right next to her.
“I know. And I’m not going to shut you out any more. I want you in Remi’s life.”
Graham smiled. “You do?”
“Yea, I do. Actually, he’s having a birthday party next weekend when he turns 5. Maybe you can come?”
“Yes, of course!” Graham exclaimed, “I’d love to!” And he kissed her hard on the mouth.
“Mom?” A small voice came from the hallway.
Emilie and Graham parted. Remi was standing in the hallway in his Star Wars pajamas. Emilie got up and walked to him, “Hey, honey. What are you doing up so early on a Saturday?”
“I had a dream.”
“Was it another bad dream?” Emilie asked.
“Not a bad one.” Remi replied, never taking his gaze off Graham.
