Peacock

When I stumble out bowing

from the lighted stage

with the thunderous clapping

behind my back,

And stumble in walking

flushed and beaming

flouncing my feathers with joy

God, please help me remind

my proud and ignorant peacock

to kneel and sing a prayer of thanks

before I reach for the party hat
