What are the benefits of getting published in a literary magazine?
A question that we get a lot is what is a writer to gain from submitting and getting published in a literary or art magazine?
Our answer? A lot.
There are so many perks to getting published in a magazine including, but not limited to, getting yourself more exposure, to getting used to tailoring your pieces in certain formats, and having more opportunities to join with other writers.
Exposure is critical as a writer. The more your name gets out there, the more likely people are to recognize you. Publishing agencies and agents can gain a certain familiarity with your name if they come across it multiple times. You may even find yourself scouted or asked for your portfolio as a result of putting yourself out there.
(Re)formatting is something all writers should be aware of. When you send in a manuscript or even a few pieces, it is important to look at the guidelines of the publication. Many times there are specific requirements in regards to format. And though it may seem like a inconveince or a petty request, this truly does make it easier for the publisher or agency. This helps to establish a certain discipline in your writing as well. And though that word seems to have developed a certain negative connotation in the art and writing world, we think that organization is important because it makes the process of reading submissions much easier. Trust us, the evaluators will appreciate you following their guidelines. If should also be noted that many times publishers will flat out reject pieces that do not abide by their rules.
Connections are very important in the art world. Many artists can go years without ever being discovered because they do not ever network with other writers. By putting your name out there, more people are likely to pursue your work. It is extremely beneficial to get to know other writers. And while we agree that friendships with writers are great, we will offer you the career-oriented perspective of this relationship. When you network with other writers, you become aware of other opportunities and publishing agencies. You can both offer each other reccomendations and preliminary feedback for your writing.
By submitting to a magazine, any magazine, you have the potential of gaining many benefits from more to add to your portfolio to building friendships with other individuals in our community.
