Mudita -- (n) delighting in the happiness of others
Mudita is a Sanskrit term that literally means “joy” or “pleasure”. It refers to the feel-good happiness that can be derived from seeing other people succeed in life. It can be likened to the heart aching joy and satisfcation a parent gets from watching their child grow up and blossom.
Mudita is also a form of meditation; taught in Buddhism as a way of gaining an inner source of infinite happiness. This practice helps yogis learn to cultivate joy through the successes and good fortune of others. Whilst this kind of empathetic joy is alleged to be the most difficult of the brahmavihara (four sublime attitudes) to attain, it can greatly enhance the life of anyone who achieves it.
