The Morning After Tequila
I was awakened by a harsh pounding in my head and a coldness that had me thinking I was going through hypothermia. I was lying on what felt like concrete and when I tried to move my arms I quickly realized that they were bound together by chains.
“Carmen? Maya?” I called out in a panic.
I shivered and waited for my eyes to adjust. I looked around the pitch black room and saw a body laying on the ground a few feet away from me. I focused my attention to the best of my abilities but the pounding in my head made it hard to do anything. I looked over and noticed the body that was lying next to me was one of my best friends.
“Maya. Get up.” I whispered.
“Maya!” I whispered a little louder, but to no avail my attempts to seemed to have fallen on deaf ears because she laid still on the ground. I focused my vision on her, but it was hard to see with the little light that peeked in through the crack under the door. Her head laid cocked to the side on the concrete ground and her eyes were covered with a blindfold.
The smell of feces and rotten flesh crept through the spacious area and a wave of nausea washed over me. I bit my bottom lip to contain the vomit. Where the hell are we? I asked myself while looking around. I scooted back and rested my head against the cold wall and took quick shallow breaths, trying to keep the nausea at bay. Maya rustled in her sleep then finally sat up. The blindfold that loosely covered her eyes fell down around her neck.
“Maya” I whispered to get her attention. I wasn’t sure if we were alone in here and I didn’t want to startle anyone else. “Maya, It’s me. Im here. Don’t panic.” I turned my body to face her and the screech of the chains caused a shiver run up my spine.
“Jaylah. What the hell is going on? Where is Carmen?” she whimpered. I could hear the fear in her voice.
“I have no idea babe, but were gonna get out of here.” I tried my best to scoot closer to her to provide a sense of security. She was always the baby of our group. She started to cry hysterically and I did my best to calm her down, but I was scared shitless too.
“Vámonos Escuchó las perras.” We heard a familiar voice say and Maya and I locked eyes instantly.
“Jay. Is.. Is that. Lucas?” she asked me with a surprised expression. I shook my head and tried to believe my boyfriend of three years didn’t have anything to do with our current situation.
“It can’t be.”
The big steel door opened and the light shined on us like we were under investigation. Lucas and Carmen stood there with a smirk and their arms crossed over their chest. There was a devilish look of mischief in their eyes.
“Lucas? Carmen? What’s going on? “ I faltered as I looked back and forth between the both of them. Lucas only stood there with a blank stare. “Answer me! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?”
“Shut the fuck up bitch! You’ll see in due time,” Carmen spat. I looked at her with complete disgust and shook my head. The tears streamed down my face when I realized the people that I trusted completely have betrayed me. And for what?
“Carmen. Please. What is happening. Why do you have us chained up and where the hell are we?” Maya whined. The mixture of snot and tears covered her face as she pleaded.
Carmen shook her head and laughed. “You stupid putas. We’re in Mexico.”
“Mexico? Lucas! Baby? What’s going on? Please im scared.” I whimpered. Lucas walked over to me and kneeled in front of me. He put his hands up to my face and wiped my tears. I looked him in the eyes and the person who was staring back at me, I didn’t recognize them at all. He grabbed my chin roughly and threw my face to the side.
“My beautiful Mami. I’m sorry I had to do this to you.” He responded and planted a soft kiss on my cheek before roughly yanking me to my feet.
