Saving Face?

"Mark?" Maria called out to the panel. The man stared at her. "That you?" she asked, voice shaking with anxiety. He blinked.

A flash, then a fissure erupted from the panel. Maria shielded her face with her arm; when she lowered it, the man was gone. Only a crack remained.
