The Mermaid
You stare out over the crest of the waves rolling in, but you can’t find me.
I am gone.
Lost in the horizon of your memories.
Softly you turn toward the left, then to the right.
Where is she?
Could she be sleeping amongst the bay of palms?
No, she is awake.
On a sailboat, but not your sailboat.
Dangling her feet imperfectly over the starboard side as she looks back toward her new love.
Her long dark tendrils caress her strong back that labored the weight of her former lover’s insecurities.
He has memorized each freckle on her face and limbs , each wrinkled line that tells her story.
He respects her, his eyes shine with a glow of love that he doesn’t quite grasp.
He just knows the mermaid he found is a special gift from the sea.
He will never let her go..
She smiles softly back at him.
Then turns toward the sea.
She slips herself over the edge and meets her peace in the cool ocean of long lost love.
