Accepting Reality
"Shining Sword Attack! You will never evade this one! Now, Die!" Rin said, making weird symbols with his hands. "Ugh. Can't you ever stop with this nonsense? I mean come on, you don't have super powers. Accept it. Accept the facts." I yelled at him. "Hmph, foolish mortal. Just because your mortal eyes can't see them, doesn't mean it's imaginary."
Rin and I are the new students at our school. Since we were too awkward to talk to the other people, we talked to each other. As a result, we became good friends. In the span of one short month, Rin and I got to know each other really well. I also realized Rin acted differently. He pretends as though he has super powers. I tried to stop him, but it didn't work. I never really understood why he was like this, but if he wasn't the world would be a really dull place.
"Hey, Rin. You wanna hang out after school today? I-I mean if you can, of course." I asked him hesitantly. "Um... Sure." He answered, confused. Hah! It worked, wow. I didn't expect it to. Now to move on to the next step. The school day went by pretty quickly. As school ended, Rin and I met up outside. "Let's go!" I yelled out to him. He noticed me and followed. We kept going to different places we had never been before. "Hey, it's getting dark. Let's head home, okay?" He asked. "Sure, but let's go to one more place."
I took Rin and headed to his favorite shop. "Buy any one thing from here. It's my treat." I said. His face lit up with joy. He ran off, and came back almost immediatly. "This. I wanna buy this."
On our way back, Rin was smiling all the way. "Hey, Rin. I have a question. Why are you like this? I mean, why do you pretend as though you have super powers? As though you are special, even though you aren't." Those words were easily the worst mistake I ever made. "You really are a monster..." As those words left his mouth, he threw his gift and ran away.
Rin didn't come to school the next day. Or the day after. I got worried. Could he have gotten hurt on his way back? I should go to his house and apologize. As soon as school ended, I ran to Rin's house. It wasn't too far away. About a 3 minute walk. As I arrived at his house, I rang the doorbell. "Hello? I'm Rin's friend. I just wanna talk to him." I announced. "Oh, you're one of Rin's friend. Come in, come in." Rin's mother said. I looked around the house, but no sign of Rin. "He's not home now, but he'll back any moment now. I'll get you something to eat." She explained. "Wait, I have a question. Why is Rin always pretending to be special? I asked. "Oh, I thought he already told you. He said he was finally going to tell. I guess he forgot," She said. "Four years ago on his birthday, his father died in a car accident. Rin had a fight with his dad. Before his father headed out, he told Rin he would always be special. So once his father died, he started to live in a fantasy. A world where he wouldn't be sad. A world where he never had a fight with his dad. I guess even he knows deep down that his dad is gone. He just refuses to accept reality as it is." I remembered what I said to Rin. "Oh no, what have I done..."
