To learn from my mistakes I must...
Pretty much anything goes. Go as in-depth with your mistakes as you would like, but don't be afraid to be figurative when necessary.
Poem does not, of course, need to have the exact title in the work.

flip it on its belly and
look for the hidden writing
beneath the sharp and scaly skin.
scrawl it onto your heart.
It'll burn, but the scars will heal,
a strong reminder for days to come.
