To choose only three to look up wasn’t easy. There were
several I wanted to do.
Chic Spy Day
This day is to acknowledge that a well-dressed spy is always more successful in catching the bad guys than a scruffy one.
The unofficial holiday is a tribute to the elegant and stylish spies in popular culture and was created in 2015 by chicspy.com, a fashion website. It commemorates the anniversary of the day in 1962, when the chicest spy of all – James Bond – made his debut on the big screen in a movie called Dr. No. Starring Sean Connery as James Bond,. The film was based on a novel of the same name by Ian Fleming.
National Apple Betty Day
On October 5, fall ushers in National Apple Betty Day with a sweet aroma of apples baked in cinnamon and oats.
The story behind this classic dessert is somewhat nebulous. There was in fact a real "Betty" of African-American descent for which the dish is named. It is believed that "brown" wasn't referring to the dish, but to the cook herself, who may have been of mixed racial background. This Betty, last name unknown, first made an apple cinnamon pie somewhere in the late 1790’s.
Later, then known as Brown Betty (1890) – This recipe was part of the winning essay for the $500 American Public health Association Lomb prize on practical, Sanitary, and Economic Cooking Adapted to Persons of Moderate and Small Means, which became a book of the same title by Mrs. Mary Hinman Abel.
National Get Funky Day
Today we celebrate the best way to improve your day from getting funky to being nice.
Funk is a musical genre known for its rhythm and bass, but the word funk literally means “bad odor.” So why would anyone pick such a stinky name for such fun music? Because when musicians wanted their bandmates to really get groovy, they’d say “Put some stank on it!” Funk is the kind of music that can make even the biggest wallflowers get out on the dance floor. So when someone tells you to get funky, they’re not telling you to stop taking showers, they want you to have fun! On National Get Funky Day do something to make yourself happy: wear some cool clothes and definitely crank up some funky tunes by bands like Parliament Funkadelic. Get your groove on!
With that said—groove to this:
More Strange Holidays Tuesday!
