Darkness

Ice-cold wind whips at my face, leaving me pale and shivering. but nothing stops me from following my mother’s voice.

“Aubin,” I hear her call up from the cellar.

Her voice sounds hollow, but I’m certain that it’s hers.

Slowly, I creep down the freezing, stone stairs and pause near the bottom. I can’t see anything but black, emptiness beyond where I’m standing, and fear of the ghastly desires of hate threaten to overcome me.

“Aubin,” Mother calls, again. She begs for me to go to her.

I need her.

So I step in, and am engulfed in the overwhelming darkness awaiting me.

“Hello,” She utters in a vicious tone. all sounds evaporate into the morbid shadows, and the only thing I hear is a door slamming from up in the house.

My name is summoned once again, but this time it truly is Mother and she's looking for me. That's when I realize I've been tricked by the fear stricken darkness.

“Mother!” I scream as the cellar doors automatically close. But my cry disintegrates with the rest of the world, and I’m swallowed up by my own, lonely desperation.
