the chickens roamed
the open land and fed
till grandma reached
neath nestled hens
to draw them out,
those eggs,
speckled and warm -
i’ve never tasted better,
and i’ve searched for them,
o beautiful, for spacious skies,
for years-gone eggs,
always and never real,
golden yolk and nostalgia to
scramble in my skillet
