“Put your back into it!” Jessie yelled.
“You are not supposed to use your back, you are supposed to lift with your legs”, David replied, calmly.
“Well then, use your legs David, use your arms, use whatever, just lift! I can’t hold my end up without you!” She grunted.
They both managed to put the dead body into the trunk of the car.
Jessie slammed the trunk shut, but it bounced back open. The body's hand was sticking over the edge, now crushed by the trunk door.
“Shit!” She said, as she pushed his hand back into the trunk, and then closed the lid.
David walked over to the passenger side of the car.
“Where are you going?” she said. “You drive.”
“Why should I drive? I don’t know where to dump a dead body.” He said.
“Do you think I know? Do you think I’ve done this before? I’m freaking out, and I drank tonight, you didn’t. I can’t drive, you have to.” She walked over to the passenger’s side.
“Yeah, heaven forbid we break the law by driving while intoxicated.” David said condescendingly, while going to the driver’s door.
“Yes,” she said as she put on the seat belt, “If we get pulled over, they might check the trunk. We have to be extra careful. Even while freaking out I’m the one thinking clearly, so there.”
“Jessie, Where are the keys?” David said.
“I don’t know, don’t you have the keys?” Jessie said, now worried.
“I think he had the keys.” He said, with a head nod towards the back of the car.
“Shit!” She said. David was beginning to think that was her favorite word.
“Good thing we left the doors unlocked. You sit tight and relax. I’ll get them.” David pulled the trunk release lever, then got out of the car and went to the trunk.
“I’ll sit tight, but I will never be relaxed again in my life.” Jessie said.
She felt the car bounce a bit as he opened the trunk, and jostled the body around, looking for the keys. He walked back to the door and got in.
“I have the keys.” He said, and started the car.
“Great.” She said, doing her best to sound calm, just incase cops do pull them over and she has to pretend this is just an ordinary day.
They sat in silence for a while as he drove.
“So, where are we going?” Jessie asked.
“I thought the waterfront. The docks. In movies they often dump bodies at the waterfront.” He said.
“I think that’s because the mob dominates the waterfront, and those are mob killings.” She said.
“The mob dominates the waterfront?” David asked.
“Not our waterfront, I mean in the movies. Our waterfront is a tuna cannery.” She replied.
“Oh.” He said. “So is the waterfront a good idea or a bad idea?”
“Fine. I don’t know. I don’t have any better ideas.” Jessie was frustrated.
Again, they sat in silence.
“Why do you think it didn’t work?” Jessie asked him.
“Honestly, I didn’t really think it would. I just went along with it because it was something to do instead of watching movies on the web.”
Jessie was a bit offended. “You didn’t trust me?”
“I trust you, but I don’t know about all that magic mumbo-jumbo. Summing and controlling a demon? I’m not so sure demons are even real, and if they are, summoning one never bodes well for people in movies.”
“I did everything right, I did everything I was supposed to.” Jessie said with a defensive tone.
“Yeah, everything according to a YouTube video. ‘How to Summon a Demon’. I, for one, was thoroughly convinced by the expertise of the lady with the face tattoos.”
“Shit.” She said, again. “It’s my fault Chris is dead.”
They arrived at the docks. He backed the car up to the boardwalk, near were a small rowboat was tied to a post.
“So, we can’t take a yacht, or a fishing boat?”
“Those need keys. The rowboat just needs me to untie a knot.”
He opened the trunk, and they both hauled the body out, and into the boat, with no complaints from either one of them this time.
They both got in, and rowed out to sea.
“Don’t blame yourself.” He said to Jessie. “You did not do anything wrong.”
“Thanks.” Jessie said. “But Chris is dead and it didn’t work.”
“No, it worked. You summoned a demon.”
“Huh?” Jessie was confused.
“Did you think it was going to materialize In the flesh? Nope. There is a reason why the spell required three people- a caller, that was you, a sacrifice, that was Chris, and a vessel.” Continued David.
“A vessel?” She said, looking at him worriedly.
“Yep. Thanks for breaking me out of hell.” He swung the oar at her head, killing her instantly. He dumped both bodies overboard, then rowed back to shore.
