Album Review: Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land by Marina
From the first single titled Purge The Poison to the stunning single titled Venus Fly Trap. The newest album Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land is one of Marina’s best works of art. Venus Fly Trap was one of Marina’s best singles and is a celebration of self-ownership. The lyrics “Why be a wallflower when you can be a Venus flytrap? I never quite fit in to that Hollywood thing, I didn’t play that game for the money or the fame” show how Marina has learned to be herself and to not be someone else. She has learned to love herself for who she is and to not be conformed.
I personally admire this song and have learned from this song to own myself and my mistakes. Purge The Poison talks about the issues in society that have gone on such as racism (she also addresses that in New America) and sexism. Purge The Poison has a nice vibe with lots of electric guitar and drums. In the beginning of the album are most of her singles and then she gives us beautiful ballads.
Her song New America talks about issues in society like racism. The lyrics “America, you can’t bury the truth, it’s time to pay your dues” talk about how America has been through too much and it’s time for our nation to pay for what it’s done. She also leads us into songs like Flowers, I Love You But I Love Me More, and Highly Emotional People which have to do with her past lover I’m assuming. Flowers talks about her past lover she was with and why she left him. The lyrics “We had the thorns and leaves but the buds they never bloomed” symbolize how her lover wasn’t giving her what she truly needed so she had to step away.
Marina then leads us to the last song Goodbye which is a song about letting go of versions of yourself. If I had to choose my top three favorite songs off this album it would be Venus Fly Trap, Flowers, and Pandora’s Box. The song Pandora’s Box is such a beautiful heartwarming song. This album was truly a work of art and it definitely will always be one of my favorites.
