"So what exactly you think these fuckers have been doing up here Fred?"
"Hell if I know James, now focus. We go in we get out. Simple. Just gotta find books or something."
As they creep down a deserted hallway the men's boots crunch into fallen glass an slosh through puddles. From the back a stark difference in build can be seen.
"Heard CDC came and went a couple years back. Isn't that the people with the hazmaz?"
"It's the center for disease control so yeah I guess they got those."
"Kinda like that kids movie with the monsters huh?"
"You been watching Pixar with your kid again?"
"Nah- Hey! Who the fuck er you?!"
Swinging his head to follow James' gaze Fred quivers.
"Dude. Put.the.gun.down."
"Who the hell is that."
"James. It's a person."
"That's a fucking monster is what it is!"
Fred wanted to agree. There was something about the man who silently appeared to the right of them that seemed unnatural. Maybe it was the way the thing clutched a hard notebook in an arm that seemed twisted around. Or maybe the fact his pupils were so dilated his iris' were gone but.
"Augh!"
"James!"
Whipping back around Fred turned to find his buddy clutching his head.
"James what wrong?"
Quivering more, Fred could feel a puddle of warmth spread across his fatigues. The guy was right behind him and jabbing him with the notebook before dropping it and dragging James, groaning, the way it came.
"J-James?"
He'd be chill, right? He'd served three years more than Fred.
"See you back at base m-man."
Lump in his throat Fred snatches the journal and doesn't look back.
Not once.
