Intergalactic Imperialism
When we began to seed the earth with ash and tar
we believed that we were everything.
We are not everything. We still want to be everything.
So we burn and space knows no direction;
smoke goes up (as smoke does)
and up is everywhere.
We want to be everywhere.
And we almost are.
It's terrifying.
Altering time itself has often been
proposed as a solution to our mistakes.
Maybe it is.
Sometimes we cannot keep living without hope.
But the far more likely truth is that
greed comes with us.
We do not have desires, we
are desires.
The Martians have fled
we smoked them out.
It's not the first time we have begged
for earth and it's poison to stay inside itself.
but intergalactic imperialism
always seems to come.
No matter how far you turn back the clocks
it is inevitable that we as the human race will
plague the universe with ourselves.
As it turns out,
you can the past, but it seems the future
is set in stone.
