Horrible Hubris
Shadows slumber as the sun goes down,
The darkness inside me awakes.
With careful steps I enter town,
My body, in anticipation, quakes.
Tonight is the night I make my mate,
I've shadowed my prey for a year.
Not another night will I wait,
I'm coming for you now, my dear.
Love is absent in my dead heart,
I only crave a fine possession.
With glee I'll watch their life depart,
And savor their desolate expression.
A wayward glance, catches mine,
Already they've entered my trap.
In a lonely alley, I sip their wine,
Death sings them down for a nap.
I am the master of this land!
No creature more powerful than I!
Just then I feel my darling's cruel hand,
In shock I release a sharp cry.
Precious rubies drip from my chest,
Adorning a crude wooden stake,
This is an outcome I'd never have guessed,
It seems I've made a grievous mistake.
A moment of hubris, I was too brash,
I now remember One more fearful than I.
As I began to turn to ash,
He sings me a cold lullaby.
My arrogance fills me with regret,
While I hear the final call.
I was a fool to actually forget,
That Death is the grimmest of all.
