The Joke of Life

The funniest thing one could ever come across

is the joke played on us by the jester that is life.

She finds twisted humor in playing our hearts,

breaking, crushing, causing constant strife.

I vowed when I was very young,

before my heart knew strain,

never would I fall for this heinous trick;

never would I make myself subject to the pain.

Little did I know,

when I spent years hardening my heart,

Life spent her nights weaving me an intricate web;

that would, in it's wake, leave me marred.

And so I am where I am,

hanging on the strings left in my chest.

Chasing not one, but two means of my destruction.

He who causes me pain, but makes me whole;

and he who soothes my burning soul, but damns me to Hell.

I think to the joke,

I laughed at all my life.

Love hit me before I had a chance to raise my arms;

and now I am a part of Life's list of conquests .
