10 steps to follow if you wake up in the middle of the night and the person beside you is not the person you love.
If you wake up in the middle of the night and the person beside you is not the person you love, here are ten steps to follow.
1. Lift up the thin blanket and feel the cool air rush in to touch your skin.
2. Forget the room slippers. Grab your clothes from the wooden chair and put them on.
3. Be extremely quiet. Put your socks on, and then your shoes. If they are hard shoes, be careful not to tap the floor.
4. You may open the curtain a little to let the moonlight in. You may take a minute or two to watch the windows of the building across from you.
5. Go to the bathroom. You may turn on the lights. If the water is dripping, wet your palms a little, then turn the tap off. If the water is not dripping, do not turn the tap on. Turn off the lights.
6. Grab your belongings. Remember your wallet, your phone, and the book you brought out to read the day before.
7. You may take a look at the person sleeping on the bed for one last time. Observe how slow it takes for air to enter their nose, expand their lungs, and exit through their nose again.
8. Don't think about anything. Leave the room. Quietly. When you open the door, do not make a sound. And when you close it, twist the knob and carefully pull the door to the latch, then release the knob.
9. You have to finish steps 1 to 8 before sunrise.
10. Get home, light a candle and leave it by the window. Lie down on your own bed, and feel, on your skin, how warm your duvet is. Wrap your pillow around your head. Promise yourself to never to go back again. But if you do, bring up this guide and follow it.
