Persistent loneliness
After slaying all of these goblins in this forest I can finally set up camp. Surprisingly right after lighting a fire this small boy appears in front of me. “Hi mister I’m Davey I come from the village next to this forest. Did you kill all these goblins? I must tell the village, what’s your name mister?”
“I'm nobody kid, don't tell anybody about me or anything that happened here,”
“Why not?”
“Because I said so!” The child was taken aback when I raised my voice.
“Jeez, you didn't have to be mean about it,” Davy mumbled. The boy seemed to lurk for a little while, not saying anything just standing there.
“Well kid you just gonna stand there?”
“I don't want to go anywhere, mister”
“Do you have a home to go to or something?”
“No those goblins killed my parent”
“Then I guess you can sit down with me by the fire for a little while,” the boy's face lit up after hearing me.
“Thank you, mister!” The boy takes his seat by the fire. After the boy sits down by the fire with me I take a good look at him, he seems to be no older than 10, and he has a mop of brown hair with a pasty pale face covered in dirty rags and mud. The only thing that seems to shine is his bright pale blue eyes. “What you stari’n at me for at me for mister?”
“Oh, sorry you just remind me of someone”
“Well, that makes sense cause my dad was the Head knight of the High King!”
“Is that so?”
“Yes, it is!”
“Last time I checked the Head Knight Gaberail didn't have children with his wife”
“Well, no he didn't. But my dad came to the village during his travels and had a child with my mom, at least that's what she said. No one believes her”
“And who might be your mom?”
“My Mom was a… Worker in the tavern”
“Ah… I see”
After talking with Davey for a while it seems the sun is starting to take its rest. After a long silence, Davey asks “Mister can I spend the night please, I promise you won't hear me, Promise!”
“Fine… here take this bag” I toss Davey the bag and he catches it with his whole body falling to the ground. “Good night mister!”
“Good night Davey” I lay my bag facing the small town by the forest, just barely in sight, the bustling life of a village slowly shutting down as I drift closer to slumber.
As I slowly open my eyes I seem to find myself In some kind of magical void. A realm made of darkness except I can see all. Laying on a mountain of skulls I hear a deep Guteral voice. “It's been thousands of days, Valor”
“What are you? How the hell do you know that name!”
“Hundreds of lives taken, all for that tyrant”
“Did you do this mister?”
“Davey?!” what the hell is happening!? I need to run, I have to get out of here!
“There is no were to run Valor! These sins you have committed, You will NEVER be forgiven for as long as you live…”
“Mister wake up!” Davey shakes me from my slumber.
“What's wrong Davey?”
“The village is under attack! You have to save the village!” I look in the village’s general direction and a plume of Black smoke darkens the sky, the smoke of death. With great haste, I pack everything together and sprint to the village with Davey barely able to keep up.
running for some time and stopping for Davey, We made it out of the forest. Looking around I see Davey panting for air and beautiful plains, lush tall grass for miles on end, to the south is the Boreal Valley and eastward there is the Great Plateau but in the middle of this Plains there is the modest town of David Town, (The town Davey is from), But as of now, that village is on fire. “Hurry mister we have to save the village!”
Listening to Davey I rush to the village trading center “here take this kid,” I hand Davey my hunting dagger
“Stay behind me and look out for my six” Davey nods and takes my back. I pull out my trusty great axe, Swendall, what a beuite’ she is, 100% Dwarven Steel from blade to handle, with the handle wrapped in Ebony dragon hide. As I was marveling at my Axe I see a giant green monster turn the corner to face me.
“Look mister it’s an ork!”
“Watch my back!"
“Ooh, sorry”
Taking a good look at the beast he seems to be around 8 to 10 ft tall with a giant lower jaw with 5-inch canines popping out of both of them.
"Perfect a chieftain," I say
“Raaah! Human, I’ll take care of you myself!” It retorts,
“In your dreams, Ork” hearing that the ork became enraged and stomped towards me “get back Davey!” I yell. I sprint towards the ork and as we meet the ork readies his two great axes as I Raise mine, The ork slams his axes at me but I dash past them and between his legs and slash both of his ankles forcing it to its knees. “Rahhhh!” the ork screams in agony. And in one fell swoop I free the orks head from its body.
The orks head drops onto the ground beside its collapsing body, blood spurts from its neck leaving a pool of blood around the village trading center. And with that, Davey and I round up the rest of the orks even easier than the chieftain all while brandishing his head as a sign of dominance. “You did it mister! You saved the village!”
“I did, your welcome Davey,” Davey seems to have this giant smile from ear to ear. Looking at him I just couldn't help but smile as well.
“C’mon mister let's go talk to the villagers!”
“I don't know if that's a-”
“Hurry up they just left the safehouse!”
“Oh god… fine” Davey is just too good at this. Pulling me to the safe house Davey looked like he was going to explode from excitement as I prepare for my doom. Once we arrive at the safe house we see the whole village right outside, they all seem confused as to why the raid ended early.
“Look everyone this guy saved the village!” Davey yells loud enough for the whole village to turn their heads to me, oh no. the first one to speak would be this white-haired man who seems to be around my age, but much closer to death than me, thickly leathery, and sunken skin, with his teeth hanging on for dear life, at least what left of them. “Did you do this sir?” the old man asked.
“I sure did,” I say, the old man seemed to be in a state of disbelief like this village couldn't possibly be valuable enough to be saved. “Thank you, sir, but we don't have much left to give you, could I at least get your name?”
“No, it's fine I was almost on my way anyways-” Before I could finish talking the elder seemed to squint his eyes to get a better look at me
“What a minute I know you...” just when I thought they would forget. The Elder's face immediately sours as he recognizes who I am.
“Your Valor! The old executioner of the high king! What do you want, Davey why the hell did you bring him here? I don't want him anywhere near here! GET OUT!” Davey seemed confused, Makes sense, if he weren't he would have never gotten near me. “Alright, I was on my way out anyway’s”
“You better, Monster!” The Elder spits
“You killed my Father!” A woman yells. I walk away with my head down, I know what I did. Decades may pass but a memory can last forever.
After walking around this town and finding my way out I hear Davey.
“Mister wait up!” Davey jogs towards me,
“What do you want Davey?”
“I just wanna talk, Valor”
“Don't Call me that! Sorry, I'm a monster don't you listen to your elder’s kid” Davey catches up with me, and now we're walking side by side.
“I don't think you're a monster, you saved the whole village, that's more than I would do, I hate those guys”
“You don't understand Davey, you're too young”
“Well then tell me!” Davey seemed adamant about this.
“Not right now… I think I'm going to lay down for a little bit,” after walking for a couple of minutes I finally find myself outside. Finding the nearest tree I sit down and rest my back on it. “Well kid, I'm going to leave tomorrow I don't think the villagers will take too kindly to me hanging around the wood’s” Davey nods in agreement.
“Well mister I don't have a home and I like being with you, so I'm going with you too”
“Alright, but don't expect anything much different besides this”
“ok, Val-”
“Dane, just call me Dane,” I say correcting Davey.
“Ok Dane, where to next?” Davey asks as I set up camp.
"I don't know, I think I'm just going to set up camp first,"
"ok!"
After setting up the fire and hunting for food, me and Davey feast on a rabbit of our own. "where did you get that?" I ask as I point at Davey's rabbit.
"the same way you did, how did ya think I lived this long by myself?"
"makes sense," I say chowing down on my rabbit, nicely rotisseried on the fire. Slowly eating I think of the surrounding area. To the east is the great plateau, of course the only way through is to the south through the High King city. Although there is the low king city to the north by the sea, oh god, never there.
"That's it! I know where we're going, High King city!" I exclaim.
"where is that?"
"It's far to the south, but it's next to the High King gate, the entrance to the great plateau,"
"Cool!" Davey says with an ear-to-ear grin.
The day was silent as we finished eating. Once we were done Davey seemed to be pondering something.
"Hey, Dane why were villagers yelling at you saying you killed their family?"
"That's because I did,"
"why?"
"That is a VERY long story, look Davey I wasn't a good man and I killed a lot of people, and all of those people have a family that misses them a lot,"
"Well you haven't killed me, so I think you're pretty nice," Davey smiles.
"Thanks, Davey," I smile back.
"Well, what about your family?"
"I didn't have one, I was raised in an orphanage,"
"oh... I'm sorry,"
"It's ok you're just curious," god I hated those days.
"wow... look at that sunset," Davey says, I turn around to face the sunset with him. The sun sprawls across the lands pouring out Beautiful orange, red, and even purplish rays casting across the sky. Davey and I watch the sun slowly set below the lands until the stars take their place in the sky.
"well... goodnight Davey,"
"night Dane," Davey smiles. Finally time for bed. Slowly as the night sets, I drift closer and closer...
"Wake the hell up Valor!" The commander screamed.
"Jesus, I'm up" I reply, rubbing my eyes I look around and find myself in my military tent.
"look valor, there is a village west of here called Davidtown, I need you to sign their loyalty to the High King, we're almost done with this campaign" The commander ordered.
"Ugh, fine," God I hate that asshole. As I'm waking up fully I grab my axe and cloak and I walk out of my tent and into the camp.
Walking down the camp I see many tents, and soldiers by those tents, Many knights and squires by their fires cooking up some breakfast, Most of the soldiers just give stares or stink eyes like usual. Some of the soldiers would even whisper to the person next to them or stop their whole conversation just to stare at me. Everything seems to stand still as I get near, like a bubble of silence that always follows me. It makes sense because I could end all of them if I wanted to, not much trust in that I guess. After a long walk of prejudice, I walk out of the camp and onto the trail to Davidtown, my target.
I look around me as I head down the trail. I see endless plains that go on for miles, far ahead of me I see Davidtown, but I also see something else. I squint my eyes to get a closer look, it seems to look like a carriage going towards me holding some kind of resource, although it seems that it's all covered in a giant cloth, I run towards the carriage to get a closer look.
"Please do not Hurt me, sir! Im but a petty trader Please!" the man riding the carriage pleads.
"No, what the hell I'm not a Rai-"
"Please don't hurt me! Here take this, just leave me alone, please!" The man throws his lunch at me and rides away before I could even get another word out.
"weird, whatever free lunch" I shrug.
After a long walk, and a nice lunch I finally arrived at the village. David Town is a nice peaceful and dense village surrounded by acres of farmland. As I head into the village I get multiple silent stares from the villagers, the whole town seemed to stand still as I stand in the center. That was until eventually one of them approach me.
"what are you doing here?" The man asked.
"I come from the military camp east of here, I am here to see the village elder,"
"fine, I'll go get him,"
the villager turns around and heads off to get him. As I look around the village center, I see trading stands bordering a giant cobblestone circle on the ground with a diameter easily bigger than 20 feet. Past the trading center, I see all of the houses and stores Built into one wall conglomerate where all of the buildings are connected. Although the villagers seem to be wary of me, Moms hiding their children, The men trying to size me up.
After waiting for a little while the villager comes back with an old man with wispy white hair, his skin saggy and wrinkled, he looks like one wrong step away from death's door.
"This is him, right there father," The villager points at me. The old man hobbles his way over to me with his walking stick.
"Ello young'n Im Ephir the village elder, what brings you here?"
"I'm valor I come from the military camp east of here," the elder's face immediately sours as I say that.
"I already told your messenger we want nothing to do with the High King!" The elder barked.
"I'm sorry, but this isn't a request-"
"Or what?" The elder dares me.
"*sigh* I didn't want to do this..." Right as I say that I pull out my axe and slam it into the elder's skull going down all the way through his body cleanly cleaving him in two. Blood splatters all over me and the village center as his body collapses to the ground spilling his organs all over around my feet. I grab the elder's son by the collar and lift him off the ground.
"Now listen here boy, unless you want to become like your father I suggest you swear your loyalty,"
"Ya sure, please don't kill anyone, Please," He says with a face full of defeat.
"Great" I drop the elder's son and he drops to the ground sitting next to his father. A few of the villagers cry out to the elder and some of the men even curse me, but they all know they can't do anything. I walk out of the village and leave without another word.
After walking for a while I exit the village. As I walk down the road back to the camp I hear something.
"Dane, Dane!" The voice calls.
"What the hell?"
The whole world around me goes black and I feel myself shaking.
"Wake up Dane!" Davey yells. I open my eyes and I see Davey on top of me shaking me awake.
"wha- what the hell is going on?" I ask.
"You were sleeping Dane, you kept making so many noises so I woke you up. You ok?"
"Ya I’m fine just had a nightmare that's all,"
"oh ok," Davey gives me a toothy smile, and I smile back.
"Well, It's morning so I think we should start packing and then well get something to eat.
"Ok!"
