Inner and Outer Beauty
The definition of beauty is “a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.” Being in a society where the beauty standard is constantly raising, it can be hard to determine what you believe is beautiful. Comparing inside and outside beauty, to be beautiful on the inside is better. Inner beauty is more important because physical beauty is only temporary, to be “beautiful” can hurt your health, and because not worrying about your physical appearance can benefit your future.
Primarily, inner beauty is better because physical beauty is only temporary. As time passes, eventually, everyone will get physically old. This is something that is unpreventable and will happen to every single one of us. Although we may be physically old, in our minds we can be as young and beautiful as we choose. The quote, “A beautiful face will age, and a perfect body will change, but a beautiful soul will always be a beautiful soul” is perfect to represent the topic of inner and outer beauty. As you get older, you gain more wisdom and learn what is truly important. The longer you live, the more you begin to realize about the real beauty in life. Sophia Loren said, “There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”
Another reason your inner beauty is more important is because the worry to be “beautiful” can start to hurt your health. With the technology we have today, people are able to alter their face and body with surgeries and medicine, whether it is to lose weight or change your natural structure. A study conducted by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, showed a death rate of about 20 in every 100,000 cosmetic surgery patients. Social Media has also had a negative effect on societies health today. Eating disorders have become common, while mental and emotional health's have also declined. Due to the beauty standard constantly raising, with the pressure of social media, many people have begun to suffer from mental illnesses. Social media has changed the way the world interacts with each other, the decisions we make that affect our overall health. Communication is a big part of our lives, and when the only form of communication we use is through technology, people can become isolated, lonely, and unable to interact face-to-face. Our decisions determine our life, and our health. Deciding whether to exercise or not, who and who not to talk to, and all the other things change our aspect in life. An example of this could be exercise. Exercising is a huge part of your physical and emotional health. Studies have shown how exercising helps improve your happiness as well as your physical state. Being healthy is more important than to be considered “beautiful”.
Lastly, inner beauty is more important because not worrying about your physical appearance can benefit your future. When you are satisfied with your physical appearance and happy with yourself, you gain confidence. In the article Physical Beauty vs. Inner Beauty it states, “People who are confident in who they are will make the right choices in life and if that person likes who they are will not change who they are for anyone. The people who have inner beauty show love, strength, power, and hope in their lives.” Having confidence in yourself leads to success. When someone is unconfident in themselves, it can be hard to stand up for themselves and easy to give into negative peer pressure. For people with more confidence it is easier to try new things, stretch their limits, and overcome fears, which can all benefit your future. Your future is one of the most important things to worry about while you are young and being confident only helps it.
In contrast, some people still may disagree. Some people might think that “inner beauty” is just something ugly people say to make them feel good about themselves. Although they may believe this, they are incorrect. For example, consider your best friend. Are you friends with them because of their physical appearance or their personality? For most of us, it is because of who they are. Even though when you meet someone for the first time your first judgement may be their physical appearance, in a healthy friendship you stick with them because of who they are and their actions.
In conclusion, inner beauty is more important because physical beauty is only temporary, to be “beautiful” can hurt your health, and because not worrying about your physical appearance can benefit your future. The world today may have the importance of inner and outer beauty backwards, but through confidence and happiness we can all find what really matters to us. A quote by an anonymous figure says, “Beauty isn't about having a pretty face. It is about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and most importantly a beautiful soul.”
