Wedlock
Chantilly clouds
veiled Eve’s celestial body
as pearled raindrops
stitched the ground
beneath the sprigs
of lavender,
dressing bare feet
with soles of peace,
awaiting
Summer to spill
its champagne
effervescence
into Sky’s
cobalt chalice
to mark the joining
of
Day and Night.
Rainbow’s tied the knot
of their faithful promise
just as Eve’ kissed them
in their wedded bliss.
Embraced in the Golden Hour,
Dusk lit soft candlelight
for Starlight’s first dance
as Day poured out its remnants,
casting long shadows in onyx ink,
before laying down its crown
atop Mount Union.
Two souls, bound as one,
honeymooned at the foot
of the eternal edifice:
a dwelling of
sacrifice
&
servitude,
foreshortened
in their view
from the meadow of mirth’s terrain
at the edge of
The Gorge
of
Holy Matrimony.
foreshortened
i didn't
get enough
time out
of you.
but it was
my own
fault.
i expected
for things
not to
last forever,
but to last
long enough.
long enough
that i
could ignore
you for
just a little
while longer.
i didn't
realize your
worth,
diamonds
and
pearls
and
rubies.
my vision
was fogged up
because i
thought what
i needed
was more
important.
turns out what i needed was you.
They say death always comes in threes
old before your time
you knew
long before
your body
began to fail
that you
would walk
with angels
sooner
rather than
later
that you would never
hear the sweet voice
of your grandson
saying, “grandpa,”
your life
foreshortened
by poor decisions.
aging before your time
your body failing
you in ways
unimagined
despite
your efforts
you deteriorate
degenerate
transform,
an old man
though your
years are
few
no “grandpa”
for you,
your life
foreshortened
by genetic coding.
old before your time
aged by grief
loss
despair,
heartbroken
heedless of
the love
with you
still,
you feel
your heart
cracked
shattered
beyond healing,
your life
foreshortened
by your hand.
Getting Closer
You cupped your ear...
it seemed big enough
to listen though
You yourself
were fading
in the distance
I thought
you couldn’t hear
all that much
And yet
for sure
you reappeared
larger than life
in my rearview mirror
your limbs looming
over all we ever did
