The Dangerous Smile
Nothing Scares An Enemy More.
Than A Person Who Keeps Smiling And Trying.
Despite His Enemies Best Efforts.
To Try And Stop Him From Succeeding.

Sad Joys
My joy is at the end of the day--or perhaps it's morning.
After I've stumbled through a dull but tiring day.
After I've started at the wall for three hours.
After I have no more tears to cry.
After I've fallen into cool sheets.
My joy is at the end of the day, when I can sleep surronded by dreams that can never be.
Awkward Eye Contact
In the miliseconds as you approach a stranger
Your brain calculates:
Do their scuffed shoes plus my torn sweater
Equal a full 2 second gaze?
Or should I glance away first?
He is a man...
Subtract my uterus from his masculinity,
And I subvert my gaze,
But this is not new math.
Recalculate.
Then again, if I stare too long,
He may think I am interested,
And that gut is obvious.
20 pounds too many plus my uterus =
I who deserve the lasting look,
But I don't think I want it?
Multiply my shame for judging his weight
By the shine of his teeth as he gives me a confident smile.
He says, "Hi how are you?"
I nod, subvert, and blush.
And he probably things that I am blushing over him,
But I am embarrased that I cannot even solve my own equation.
waking life
ceiling -
curtains cloud the sun -
contours separate the painting
from the wall -
“what time is it?” -
but I don’t check the phone.
I lay there, thinking nothing,
and stare at cracks in the ceiling,
not wishing I was back dreaming
but not too excited either.
blanket and bed's better in the morning
than in the night - cement cold, cement hard;
so I coccoon myself further,
not because I want to go back to sleep
but because thoughts start pattering
on diner windows and I start
acknowledging the refracted worlds
within each drop and streak.
from laundry to coffee -
day's to do list -
visualize each and every one.
mannerisms, ticks, the whole shebang,
flicker dimly on a projector screen
inside the head.
so far out, I'm gone.
I'm not in bed anymore.
I'm drinking coffee.
I'm doing dishes.
I'm cleaning my room.
I'm buying groceries.
I'm -
- back in bed.
mindfulness is a muscle.
writing helps to stay present.
out of nowhere, not of my own accord,
I get up,
but not because I wanted to,
but because the sun rises,
and because roses know when to let go,
and because blood vessels of black bears beat
bass rhythms of the season,
and because hatchlings crawl and struggle
with sand-sprinkled grins,
shaming icarus as they charge
towards the horizon over white valleys
of thunder waves,
and because we're wired to do the same.
One Moment
Remember that moment
You say
something funny
she says
something mocking
we all
don't care
it's funny
I laugh
I look around
they are all laughing
No one cares
We all just laugh
Nothing else matters
We are only laughing at each other
Afterall, it's what friends do
No one's mad at any one
No one's sad
No one's crying
Only laughter rings out
In just this single moment,
Notice,
nothing else matters.
Everything,
is better.
