I watched her eyes shine as she looked up at the stars. Her dark hair was almost invisible against our black blanket.
"It's really pretty, isn't it?" I asked. "The stars are always so much prettier when we are out of the city."
"Ah, yes." She looked sad as she gave me a kiss. "So much prettier. There's... Something I need to tell you." She glanced at me, and a tear ran down her cheek. A falling star. "I..." She broke off.
"Yes?" I asked, worry becoming a tight knot in my chest.
"I... I... You know I will always love you. Right?" Her voice was desperate, pleading. "B-because I will. You know that. Don't you? Don't you?"
"Yes. Are you okay? What's going on?" I wrapped my arms around her, and for a long moment we just stared into each other's eyes.
She rested her head on my shoulder, and sighed. "I didn't want to leave. I wanted--I wanted to stay, but-"
"What is going on?" I asked again, my voice rising.
"I have to leave!" She blurted out, tears spilling down her beautiful starlight face. "I have to go, I have to go, I have to go! And I'll never see you again."
There was a long silence. The wonderful night we had been having now seemed dreary and sad. The stars seemed to have lost their light, and the moon now just seemed a remainder that I was never going to see the person I loved most ever again.
"Why... Why are you leaving?" I choked out. "And when?"
"We're moving. Me. My family. To the Netherlands. I don't know why they want to, or... Or why they don't listen to me when I told them that I did not want to go. We are..." This seemed especially hard to get out for her. "We are leaving tomorrow. Morning. At four. This is our last night together."
My throat burned with tears, but I forced them away, forming a red hot knot in my throat. "You are leaving tomorrow? But... But, I..." I struggled with my words. "But I love you!"
"I love you too." She got up shakily, bent down to give my forehead a kiss, and then murmured, "I'll never forget you. I promise." That was the last thing she said to me before she walked away. The dance of farewell.
