What If
What IF?
Indignation split.
Fact clacks
against the
roof and
tongue
in protest...
of the silent
litany already
bereft of one...
...so DeFinite.
What IF?
will sit
centerfold...
like a dollar clip
in the made-up bed
where semi social
conscience slept
and awoke
wet in its own
Nightmare.
What IF?
elephantine
sighs and
leaves
no room
between
the quest
the question
the questioner...
to internal inquest
Condemned.

So Many Questions, So Little Time
What if I was born in a different time?
How would that affect my life?
What would be the same?
What would change?
What if I hadn’t gone to college?
Would I have more money now?
Would I have a career that I am proud of?
What if I was born in another country?
What would my values be?
Who would I have become?
All these “What If’s” have so many follow up questions to them;
If I keep asking “What If…?” I would be questioning myself all day.
For me, "What If’s" are dangerous since I don’t stop the spiral of questions after it.
Unspoken Words
What if I had shared with you
The vision that I saw?
Would you have changed your mind
Could we bend the destined law?
Perhaps if pleading stronger
Before you closed the door
Departing from our lives
You’d turn back; walk through once more?
If I’d asked you four times
Instead of only three
“I have a dreaded feeling
Please, stay here with me.”?
Could I have pricked your heart
Waking truth; validity?
Hold at bay the tides
Set back the shore from sea?
If I shared the vision;
You sleeping as though dead
That morning as you slumbered
In the comfort of our bed
Could the words have power
Convincing you and Fate
When time, the hour beckoned you
To death; eternal wake?
Falling
What if the sky was perpetually falling? Would we be prepared for it? Would it catch us by surprise, like a thief in the night, or would be so accustomed to dystopian novels and their cinematic adaptations by then that we would be desensitized to their potential impact on our everyday lives? All fair questions, but the most important question of all is: What would it do to humanity and the planet we call home?
