Flight
The sidewalk is like my ashy, ceramic pottery.
It is covered with cracks, mistakes.
I watch the couples who walk on the sidewalk
from my window.
They smile and laugh and fight and love.
They waltz and dance and kiss and hug.
A smile widens across my face. I feel sorry for them.
They aren’t paying attention to the scorching heat.
It will shatter them into a million, tiny little pieces
when the kiln gets too hot.
The crack will be small at first:
clinginess, alcoholism, a late rent pay.
But it will widen to an abyss,
and they will fall into it—alone.
