Chapter Three
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the morning light hit Damian, it made him reflect on his feelings. He and the rest of the group, including Asher, had been traveling for three days on the journey towards the Underdeath. The lich had dragged Asher by the ear for the first few miles to make sure he came before he swore a blood oath not to leave before the quest was over unless she told him to. Damian was about to jump up and go get some breakfast, but then he remembered he was brooding. He had been forced to assist with the chores. Him, the demon lord, the bringer of the downfall of the Kingdom of Iros, ruler of the 13th layer of the Underdeath. Of course, the lich didn’t have to. No one could ever find her. But if he skipped the chores then he would have less time to spend with Mikaela and would be faced with a lecture from Elizabeth.
“Gods, why can’t I figure out which guy I like?” In his mind both of them were perfect. There was Mikaela: the perfectly cute, nice guy, who showed kindness to everyone. And there was Asher: the devilishly handsome, bad boy that drove him crazy. He sighed exasperatedly.
He knew that Elizabeth would tell him to go with Mikaela because it was extremely obvious that she had a burgeoning crush on Cain and there was no way he was asking the lich for advice. He had a major grudge against the lich because of the fact she created a ghost that only he seemed to be able to see. It hung out around Mikaela and Asher whenever he wanted to speak to them, just to annoy him. He knew the lich could hear everything the ghost could because the ghost had a tendency to tease him whenever he was alone.
If he could kill her without upsetting Elizabeth or Mikaela, he would. He really hated those knowing looks she gave him, they drove him crazy. Not the good kind of crazy like when he got berated by Asher. Not the head-over-heels-in-love crazy, the kind of crazy that caused the emotional outbursts he was known for.
When the group started traveling again the sun had just set on the horizon. Then on the path, they saw a light. When they took a moment to examine it they saw what it was. An orphanage. It was on fire. Elizabeth groaned.
“Damian. Again?” She said, giving him a look.
The demon responded panicked, “It wasn’t me this time! See, I don’t have matches.”
“Again? This time?” Mikaela asked with a worried tone. The demon just shot him a judgy look.
After Mikaela recovered from the look, he said with a weak smile, “Thinking of those kids burning to death warms my heart.”
Everyone stared at Mikaela like he was crazy, except Damian and Cain.
Damian responded to this flirtatiously, “You’re cute when you’re sadistic.”
However, Elizabeth was horrified about that comment, but then again she was the pinnacle of good especially when compared to Damian, Mikaela, Asher, and the lich who were, in that order, mean, sadistic, evil, and more evil.
After Asher literally had to knock Elizabeth out and drag her away from the burning orphanage.
Asher started talking to Damian, “I swear, she is good to a fault.”
He responded, “Yeah, it’s annoying.”
For once they both agreed on something. After Elizabeth came to, she and Damian decided they needed to practice combat after Damian went on the world guilt trip.
“We need to practice fighting,” she said.
He responded, “Why~ that’s so much work!”
Then he figured out why she wanted to practice, “Unless... is this to impress Cain? Ohhh, does someone have a crush?”
Elizabeth’s face turned bright red and she started denying everything. “No, no, no, no, no, no! That is in no way the reason!”
“Then what?” he inquired mockingly.
She responded belligerently, “Whenever we need to fight, you rely too heavily on your magic and ability to fly. If you were unable to use them then you would be extremely weak.”
He grudgingly agreed but still protested, “But it’s so much more fun to cause people to spontaneously combust. And in what instance would I not be able to use my magic nor fly?”
They trained for hours until Damian started throwing up blood. After he recovered he gave Elizabeth the one-finger salute and flew off. Elizabeth proceeded to facepalm and sigh; her little brother was so annoying. Then there were the times that he did random things like when he was fighting the army of Iros and charmed a third of the army and turned the rest into cats (because of course, he did ). Whenever he came to visit he still brought ten charmed bodyguards. There were also the times he flirted with random guys that he thought were hot or as he said it “worthy of his personal attention”.
