Who Would Have Thought That She Could Smile?
Who would have thought that she could be so happy? I remember like it was yesterday, the way she trembled when someone got closer to her and the way her eyes told a story that I could only imagine because she couldn’t talk about it. All I knew was that my father found her in the garbage while he was ordering at McDonald’s drive-thru.
He saw something moving the bags of garbage, it was hairy and small. Intrigued, he got off his car and took a closer look, it was a little dog with blond hair, although its muzzle was black. With fearful eyes, she saw my father who took her and gave her a home and a name, Clary.
Even though she already had a home her sad and fearful eyes persisted. The first time I saw her she barked at me with rejection as she did with everyone except my father. Due to her constant depression my father gave her to me to see if her depression could go away.
I got her into the car and all the way she was staring at me with her eyes wide open with distrust. When she arrived home, she could not stop shaking and her little paws weren’t strong enough to hold her with her head held high. I introduced her to my two other dogs Sookie and Jessy and she stood still lying on the ground.
The first days she began to walk the house with curiosity and silence when no one was watching. Then a few days more she started to run all the house with Sookie. Her blond hair began to shine like the sun and her eyes abandoned all the fear and sadness.
She began to eat more and even gain a lot of pounds. I remember that the happiest moment of my life with her was when she smiled at me for the first time. When she wrinkled her eyes and made a smile, and I thought to myself, who would have thought that she could smile?
