I Don’t Always Close My Eyes
I don’t always close my eyes when I kiss you
Sometimes I keep them open
Stare at the poster of Guernica behind your bed
Wonder what that dead soldier means
I always let you fall asleep first
Well
My arm falls asleep first
Then you fall asleep
And I shift to the opposite side of the bed
I’m afraid that if I hold you
You’ll feel what I feel whenever I close my eyes
I also get hot easily
I worry that depression might be contagious
Love isn’t a vaccination against it
At best, love is a mosquito net
With a few rips in it
So I build walls around myself
And hope that the germ theory applies to depression
That keeping myself at a distance
Will keep you healthy
Happy
I know what that dead soldier means now
I wrote a paper on it

She’s Born of Grace
She’s born of grace
She’s born of lust
A lovely face
I’d love to trust
Her face to hold
Her lips to kiss
Her heart to know
Her shape to miss
There was a void in my life
A vacant hole
Meant for her
Shaped like her soul
That void is filled
The world is sweet
Now that I’ve found her
My life’s complete
Broken
It’s always been
my earnest opinion
that people don’t change.
But sometimes
you see someone,
And they’re just
Different.
Your son comes
home from war,
and he’s different.
Your mother walks out
of the funeral home,
and she’s different.
Not how they used to be.
They didn’t change.
I already told you.
People don’t change.
the poor bastards
didn’t change.
They broke.

Write it Out
Write
Write your love
And write your fear
And write it all out crystal clear
So you can then reread your verse
Traverse a written universe
Enshrined inside your poignant words
It matters not how long or terse
Your pensive prose will one day birth
Progeny of love and fear
Depicted candid and sincere
Thus you may know what’s in your soul
Know it all and know it whole
So all that peer upon your prose
And stop to probe what you compose
And forgo all they know
Can freely read beyond the ink
And comprehend what poets think
And thus they may then understand
The feelings of an unknown man
And learn to love all unknown men
Regardless of their speech or skin
And begin to mend the world again
To quell the swells of spite and sin
And defend against spells of despair
Resolving resentment here and there
Resolved because you dared to bare
Your soul which through your prose was shared
And swear to make the world aware
Of how to love and how to care
And ensure that none become ensnared
In all the hate we must beware
Through motley words and rhymes declared
In pedantic prose you’ve pruned and pared
With all your will withheld within
Conveyed through heart and mind and pen

Sad Blood
Depression
is having a heart
that constantly pumps sadness
through your veins
and desperately wanting
that heart to stop.

Won’t You Come Hold Me
Won’t you come hold me
Won’t you come help me
I’m at the mercy of my mind
And I’m not fine
So won’t you come hold me
Wrap your arms around my body
Tell me that I’m yours
And tell me that you’re mine
Encircled by your arms
I just might feel fine

Writing is Like Shouting
Writing is like shouting
Into the void
The void is dark
The void is scary
But shout loud
And shout clear
And soon enough
Someone will hear
