Erasure
Racism is basically modern day tribalism. We recognize that we look and act one way, and they are many groups who don't do exactly as we do. Those people become the dreaded them. Them who act so differently than we do. Them who don't believe and act exactly as we do, so they become this mysterious and complete polar opposite to us. This psychological and physical barrier comes up between these two groups, causing a rift in what could be such a wonderful trade of ideas and tricks to make surviving and thriving that much easier. That old proverb comes to mind. Two heads are better than one. Indeed, having two years striving towards the same goals makes everything in its difficulty reduce to half or even less. Sometimes those heads quarrel and coming the difficulty, but that's the risk we take in any joint venture.
The list of things that EVERY HUMAN BEING EVER TO EXIST, BEFORE, NOW, AND IN THE FUTURE, IN PERPETUITY, has in common with one another, is one hell of a list. The bullets on the other list that separates us are as arbitrary as drawing imaginary lines that separate the countries of the world. We impose these detractions and call these people this and those people that. We then align to those who give us benefit and further separate ourselves to those who don't see the world the way we do, worship the same god, rest the same diet, talk the same way, you fucking name it and it has become a way to separate one another evermore. I'm an adopted bastard Native American male who is a navy veteran and is a current college student, that maintains an omnivorous diet. That means there's a woman of Polish descent who is a vegan that opposes the military and institutionalized education and thinks that illegal immigrants deserve more rights than actual Native Americans who are still experiencing oppression by immigrants who are legal by the colonial immigrant children who took over the continent. Does that mean we could never be friends? At face value, it looks like that could be the verdict. If we removed all those labels, and put in absolute, scientific facts in lieu of imposed labels maybe we'll see a difference.
An adult male who consumes a variable diet, breathes air, sleeps a few hours in a 24 hour period, expels waste in solid and liquid form, and has the ability to create and utilize tools that reduce the work to complete tasks. An adult female who consumes a limited diet, breathes air, sleeps a few hours in a 24 hour period, expels waste in solid and liquid form, and also has the ability to create and utilize tools to reduce the work to complete tasks.
The only difference there was a slight dietary change. So, according to normal human etiquette, and social norms, these two are still enemies because of a slight difference. In nature, these two could benefit from each other and reduce the workload on both of them and even create a surplus of supplies. Man, isn't that just awesome?
Too bad working together for the common good and general welfare of all is such a faux pas these days.
Racism
Racism is a perfectly natural human defence instinct that urges us to gather and roam with our own particular herd. It has defence elements supplemented deep within it that drive us to maintain our collective purpose and integrity.
However, that said, it best served its purpose in another age when as travelling groups we depended upon each member to be continuously on their guard for outsiders, who perhaps presented a threat in those primitive early years of evolution.
In today's society of merging races it has no purpose and is rightly denounced as the villain it is.
Given time and the intricacies of evolution it will vanish of its own accord, but for that to occur humankind must continue to instil into its collective psyche its obsolescence.
Like everything else worth the fight, we will as a species get there in the end, provided of course it doesn't destroy us all in the process.
And that is Racism, horrendous isn't it.
What we all know to be true.
I played with Susie yesterday,
But now she says to go away,
Her mommy doesn't want me near,
when I go out the streets are clear.
To Ferguson and those that follow,
What we need is not another revolution, we do not need fingers pointed at those not at fault and we do not need speculation that only harshens public opinion. Over the course of the last full calender year several incidents have been brought to light, and not only that but action have been take. Quiet recently #Blackout appeared across one of my social media sites with a rebuttal against some one wishing to view things other then an endless stream of Africans, and African Americans. Not only did the party fail to ask themselves why, but they instantaneously fired shots at the user. Calling them harmful names and calling them racist when in all actuality they know nothing of the person behind the screen. Hiding behind screens, television or otherwise leaves people as a whole more prone to jumping to conclusions and not only that but bandwagons.
If someone posts it and several agree it must be correct. Right? after all the were the first to report on a story or offer breaking news. And not only is this face value media believability the problem but also the feeling of being left behind, left out. If my story isn't front age then it doesn't matter. Lack of validation can lead to volatile reactions as people need someone other then themselves to blame.
True, they are as always those who dislike certain ethnic groups, but I believe that is rather as a result of the differences between the ethnic groups culture and theirs or the culture they have brought up in.
Change, can always be a reason for hate. Humans like predictability and their brains are hard wired to make sense of their world. This however can lead to poor representation.
My grandfather lived in Detroit back when it was nice and safe, he is and he acknowledges that he is prejudice, and he has told my mother that when African Americans moved in with their Cadillacs Detroit went to hell and that all the Caucasians moved out. This I believe was not as a result of their ethnicity but the culture they brought with them.
But when Culture and Ethnicity cross lines the result can become catastrophic. Stereotypes form and become 'innate truths' and those 'truths' become harder to break when a many few are villainised.
For those teens who have lost their lives to unfair circumstances and unjust beliefs, they were collateral damage.
And I can saw change the culture, but is that fair?
I can say increase the literacy rate and improve education, I can say move into better neighbour hoods, Bur can THEY?
And if they can't is it then their fault?
Is it their fault that lottery systems and lemon teachers are the fate of those who live in the bracts they have to?
That they aren't supplied the tools?
That they cant afford them?
But can I also tell others to live life as a blank slate and a hard to write pen and tell them to throw out each and every preconception of the world they have formed up to this day?
Well I can, But it doesn't mean they will.
Can I make people guard their minds with scepticism but hold a holistic view on life? Take truths with a grain of salt?
No.
But I can advise them, I can tell them that no amount of culture should bare understanding between ethnicity's. I can tell them that there are no racial constraints as society may say. I can tell them that no amount of misconception should grant one human being to demean another over something they can not change or things they do not hold self evident about themselves.
But I can not make a horse drink.
